# Set up your AI tool

Where your Heropost link goes in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex CLI, n8n and any other MCP client, which authentication setting to pick, and the snags to avoid.

**Where:** Home → **Connect your AI tools** → pick your tool. Workspace owners and Admins.

## Before you start

- **You're the workspace owner or an Admin.** Editors and Viewers don't see **Connect your AI tools**.
- **You're in the right workspace.** A link works in the workspace that was open when you made it, and nowhere else.
- **Your AI tool's plan allows it.** ChatGPT needs Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise. Perplexity needs Pro, Max or Enterprise. Raycast needs Raycast Pro.
- **You have a free connection.** Every plan connects 3 AI tools; Pro connects 10 and Agency unlimited. Connections are counted across all the owner's workspaces. See [Limits](/docs/ai-tools/limits-and-errors/).

## Get your Heropost link

1. On Home, click **Connect your AI tools** at the top right. On a phone, go to Home with no conversation open (press **+** to start a new one), tap the status line under the greeting to open **Workspace**, then tap **Connect your AI tools**.
2. On the **Connect** tab, pick your tool. If it isn't listed, press **Any MCP-compatible tool works**.
3. Heropost makes the link straight away and shows three steps: where the link goes in your tool, the link, and what to ask first.
4. Press **Copy**. Tools that take a command or a config file get it ready-made, with your link inside.

[Screenshot: Connect Claude: step 1 says where the link goes, step 2 shows the link with Copy, step 3 says what to ask, and the status reads Waiting for Claude's first call]

Your link looks like this:

```text
https://mcp.heropost.io/mcp/hp_ag_xxxx…
```

- **The link is the key.** There's no sign-in, OAuth or token to set up. In your AI tool, choose no authentication.
- **It's shown in full only once.** If you leave Home, reload or switch workspace, it's hidden. Press **New link** to get a fresh one; the old one stops working.
- **Treat it like a password.** Anyone who has it can use this connection. See [Safety](/docs/ai-tools/safety/).

**Opening a tool card uses a connection.** The link is made the moment you pick a tool, and it counts toward your plan's connections even if you go no further. Remove the ones you don't use under **Your tools**.

## ChatGPT

Needs ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise.

### On chatgpt.com

1. Turn on **Settings → Security and login → Developer mode**. ChatGPT calls this "elevated risk": that's its standard wording for any connector it hasn't reviewed itself.
2. Go to **Settings → Plugins → Browse plugins** and press **+**. The **New Plugin** window opens.
3. Name it **Heropost**. Leave **Connection** on **Server URL** and paste your link.
4. Set **Authentication** to **No authentication**. It starts on OAuth, which fails with Heropost.
5. Tick **I understand and want to continue** and press **Create**.
6. Start a new chat and ask "Show my Heropost accounts".

[Screenshot: ChatGPT's New Plugin window with Authentication set to No authentication]

### In the ChatGPT app for Mac

1. Open **Settings → Plugins**, go to **MCPs** and press **Add**.
2. Name it **Heropost** and set **Type** to **Streamable HTTP**. It opens on STDIO, which asks for a launch command you don't need.
3. Paste your link into **URL**. Leave **Bearer token env var** and **Headers** empty.
4. Press **Save**.

### No Developer mode on your computer, or using a phone

In some cases, Developer mode doesn't appear in ChatGPT in a computer's browser. Open chatgpt.com in your phone's browser and switch it on there, under **Settings → Security and login → Developer mode**. Then use Heropost in the ChatGPT desktop app.

### Good to know

- **"does not implement OAuth"** means **Authentication** was left on OAuth. Add Heropost again with **No authentication**.
- **Say "Use Heropost…".** Asked loosely, ChatGPT often writes the post in the chat and saves nothing.
- **Heropost doesn't need to appear in ChatGPT's Plugins or @ menus.** Start a new chat and ask "Show my Heropost accounts".
- **ChatGPT asks for your confirmation when it first calls a tool.** Only `delete_post` and `delete_media_subject` carry ChatGPT's "destructive" label.
- **ChatGPT takes the link only.** The header option below isn't available for it.

## Claude

Works in claude.ai and the Claude app for Mac.

1. Open **Settings → Connectors**, press **+ Add** at the top right and choose **Add custom connector**.
2. Name it **Heropost**, paste your link as the **MCP server URL** and press **Continue**.
3. Leave **Authentication** on **No sign-in**. Claude marks it **Detected**. Press **Add**.
4. Ask "Show my Heropost accounts".

[Screenshot: Claude's custom connector screen after Continue, with No sign-in · Detected selected]

- **Claude warns that anyone with the server URL can use the connector.** That's right for Heropost: the link is the key. Keep it private.
- **The Mac app has the same panel in the same place.** Added Heropost on claude.ai and can't see it in the app? Quit and reopen the app.
- **Claude often asks which account and what angle** before it saves a draft. Answer, and it saves.
- **Header option:** on the same screen, Claude can send **Request headers**. See [Keep the key out of the URL](#keep-the-key-out-of-the-url).

## Claude Code

Run this once in your terminal. Heropost's card gives it to you with your link inside:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http heropost https://mcp.heropost.io/mcp/hp_ag_xxxx…
```

Then ask Claude Code "Show my Heropost accounts".

## Cursor

Use the Cursor app. The cursor.com dashboard has no MCP settings.

1. In the left sidebar of the Cursor app, open **Customize → MCPs** and press **New MCP Server**. Cursor opens `~/.cursor/mcp.json`.
2. Add the `heropost` entry from Heropost's card and save. Keep any servers already in the file.
3. The MCPs page lists heropost with its tools. Cursor asks for permission the first time it uses one.

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "heropost": {
      "url": "https://mcp.heropost.io/mcp/hp_ag_xxxx…"
    }
  }
}
```

- **heropost shows "Error" on the MCPs page:** the file must be valid JSON, starting with `{` and ending with `}`, and saved. **Show Output** next to the error says what's wrong.

## VS Code

Needs GitHub Copilot, signed in (Copilot Free is enough). Heropost's tools are used from Copilot Chat in **Agent** mode.

1. Open the Command Palette (⌘⇧P on a Mac, Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows) and run **MCP: Add Server**. Choose **HTTP**, paste your link and press Enter.
2. VS Code asks for a **Server ID**. Type **heropost**, or keep the one it suggests.
3. It's saved to your user `mcp.json` and shows **✓ Running · 33 tools**. If it isn't running, press **Start** above its entry.
4. In Copilot Chat, switch to **Agent** mode and ask "Show my Heropost accounts".

For one project only, put this in `.vscode/mcp.json` instead:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "heropost": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.heropost.io/mcp/hp_ag_xxxx…"
    }
  }
}
```

## Codex CLI

1. Install Codex CLI once with `npm i -g @openai/codex`.
2. Run the command from Heropost's card. Keep the quotes and the whole link, including `https://`.
3. Start `codex` and type `/mcp`. heropost shows **connected (33 tools)**.

```bash
codex mcp add heropost --url "https://mcp.heropost.io/mcp/hp_ag_xxxx…"
```

- **"relative URL without a base"** means something other than your link went in. Run `codex mcp remove heropost`, then add it again with your link.
- The ChatGPT desktop app shares this setup.

## n8n

Tested in n8n Cloud, in the browser editor.

1. Start a workflow with the **On chat message** trigger.
2. Add an **AI Agent** and give it a **Chat Model**. A new agent has none.
3. Under **Tool**, press **+** and pick **MCP Client**.
4. Paste your link as **Endpoint**. Leave **Server Transport** on **HTTP Streamable** and **Authentication** on **None**: they're the defaults.
5. Open the chat and ask "List my Heropost accounts".

## Perplexity, Raycast and Devin (Windsurf)

Heropost lists these in **Connect your AI tools** but hasn't tested them on a real account. The steps follow each tool's own instructions.

- **Perplexity** (perplexity.ai, Pro, Max or Enterprise): add a custom connector (remote MCP server) named **Heropost**, with no authentication.
- **Raycast** (Mac app, Raycast Pro): add an MCP server (HTTP) named **Heropost**.
- **Devin (Windsurf):** in Devin Desktop add an MCP server, or put this in its `mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "heropost": {
      "serverUrl": "https://mcp.heropost.io/mcp/hp_ag_xxxx…"
    }
  }
}
```

Different screen, or it doesn't connect? [Tell support](/docs/troubleshooting/get-help/), with a screenshot and the exact error text. We update these steps from real screenshots.

## Any other MCP client

Press **Any MCP-compatible tool works** under the tool cards. Heropost makes a link named **Your MCP tool**.

- Add a **remote MCP server** over **HTTP (streamable)**, name it **Heropost** and paste your link. No authentication.
- Your client must support remote MCP servers. Clients that only run local (stdio) servers can't connect directly.
- MCP SDKs and agent frameworks work the same way. See [Calling the tools directly](/docs/ai-tools/tool-reference/#calling-the-tools-directly).

## Keep the key out of the URL

Some tools can send the key in a header instead of inside the link. That keeps it out of your address bar, your shell history and any screen share. Same key, same access. On the card, open **Prefer to keep the key out of the URL?** to get these with your key filled in.

[Screenshot: The Prefer to keep the key out of the URL? fold, open, with the header version of the setup]

The server address is then `https://mcp.heropost.io/`, and the key goes in `Authorization: Bearer hp_ag_xxxx…`.

| AI tool | Header version |
|---|---|
| Claude, Perplexity, Raycast | Server URL `https://mcp.heropost.io/`, header name `Authorization`, header value `Bearer hp_ag_xxxx…` |
| Claude Code | `claude mcp add --transport http heropost https://mcp.heropost.io/ --header "Authorization: Bearer hp_ag_xxxx…"` |
| n8n | Endpoint `https://mcp.heropost.io/`, **Authentication** Bearer, your key as the token |
| ChatGPT | Not available: use the link |

Cursor (`~/.cursor/mcp.json`):

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "heropost": {
      "url": "https://mcp.heropost.io/",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer hp_ag_xxxx…" }
    }
  }
}
```

VS Code (`mcp.json`):

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "heropost": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.heropost.io/",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer hp_ag_xxxx…" }
    }
  }
}
```

Codex CLI (`config.toml`):

```toml
[mcp_servers.heropost]
url = "https://mcp.heropost.io/"
http_headers = { "Authorization" = "Bearer hp_ag_xxxx…" }
```

Devin (`mcp_config.json`): the same as Cursor, with `serverUrl` instead of `url`. Other clients can also send the key as `X-Agent-Key: hp_ag_xxxx…`.

The key is only shown once. If you didn't keep it, press **New link** on the card to get a fresh one. The old link stops working.

## Check it works

1. In your AI tool, ask "Show my Heropost accounts" ("List my Heropost accounts" in n8n).
2. In Heropost, the status changes from "Waiting for {tool}'s first call — this turns green by itself." to "Connected — {tool} reached Heropost …". You don't need to reload.
3. Ask "Use Heropost to create a draft post for Friday about …".
4. Open the **Activity** tab. A saved draft shows as **create post · 1 action**, and the post is under **Content → Drafts**.

Only "free" rows in Activity, or nothing at all? The tool wrote text without saving it. Ask again, starting with "Use Heropost…". More fixes: [AI tool connection problems](/docs/ai-tools/troubleshooting/).

## Connect more than one workspace

1. Switch Heropost to the other workspace.
2. Open **Connect your AI tools** there and pick the same tool. You get a separate link, which uses another connection.
3. In your AI tool, add it as a second server with its own name, for example **Heropost Client B**, so you can tell them apart.

## Questions

**Do I have to set the tool up again after changing its permissions?**

No. Permissions apply straight away and the link stays the same. Only **New link** changes the link. See [Links, permissions and activity](/docs/ai-tools/links-permissions-activity/).

**I didn't copy the link and now it's hidden. What do I do?**

Press **New link**, on the card or in the tool's row under **Your tools**. Copy the new link into your AI tool. The old one stops working.

**My AI tool asks for OAuth, a client ID or a token. What do I enter?**

Nothing. Heropost doesn't use OAuth or a separate token: the key is inside your link. Choose no authentication (**No authentication** in ChatGPT, **No sign-in** in Claude, **None** in n8n).

**Can I connect Zapier or Make?**

Zapier can't connect: its MCP feature lets AI tools connect to Zapier, and has nowhere to add an outside server. Make's MCP Client didn't connect in our tests. n8n works.

**Which AI tool should I pick?**

Any of them works with the same 33 tools. Use the one you already work in. In our tests, Claude and Cursor saved drafts even when asked loosely; ChatGPT saves when you say "Use Heropost…".
