# Squarespace automation: post new blog posts

Paste your Squarespace site's address and Heropost finds your blog's feed, even when the blog page isn't called /blog. Each new blog post arrives with its title, summary, link and picture.

## How it works

Every Squarespace blog page has a feed at its address followed by `?format=rss`. Paste your site's home page address, and Heropost finds the feed:

1. It tries `/blog?format=rss`.
2. If that isn't it, it uses the feed your home page announces.
3. Otherwise it looks for blog pages linked from your home page called `news`, `journal`, `articles`, `updates`, `stories`, `blog-1` or `posts`.

Each new blog post becomes an item you can post, or that Heropost posts for you. There's no Squarespace login.

## Set it up

1. Copy your site's home page address, for example `https://your-site.squarespace.com` or `https://yourbusiness.com`.
2. In Heropost, click **Automations** in the left menu, then **Create Automation**.
3. On the **Squarespace** card, press **Add Automation**.
4. Paste the address in **Squarespace Site URL** and press **Save**. Heropost shows "Squarespace automation created! Your items are being imported and will appear shortly."
5. Press **Settings** on the new automation, select your accounts, choose **Read from Source** or **Publish Immediately**, and press **Save**.

### Choose a specific blog page

If your site has several blogs, or Heropost picks the wrong one, paste the blog page's address followed by `?format=rss`, for example `https://yourbusiness.com/journal?format=rss`. An address that already contains `format=rss` is used as it is.

## What each item contains

| Part | From your blog's feed |
|---|---|
| Title | The blog post's title. |
| Description | Its excerpt as plain text, or its text when there's no excerpt. |
| Link | The blog post's address. |
| Picture | One picture: from the feed or the post, or the post's preview picture. |

## Settings that work well

- **Preferred Post Type:** **Link**, **Backup Post Type:** **Image**.
- **Caption:** **Custom** with `{{title}} {{link}}` keeps posts short enough for every network.

All settings: [Automations: how they work](/docs/automations/automations/#settings).

## If it doesn't work

Open your blog page's address followed by `?format=rss` in a private browser window. It should show a feed, not an error or a password page.

| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Invalid URL" | The address isn't complete. | Paste the full address, starting with https://. |
| "The supplied URL host could not be resolved: {host}." | The domain doesn't exist or is mistyped. | Check the spelling of your site's address. |
| "An unexpected error occurred while processing your request." when you save | Heropost couldn't find or read a blog feed. The site may be password-protected, or the blog page isn't linked from the home page. | Paste the blog page's address followed by `?format=rss`. |
| Posts from the wrong blog are imported | Heropost found another blog page first. | Add a new automation with the right blog page's `?format=rss` address, then delete this one. |

## Questions

**My blog isn't at /blog. Does it still work?**

Usually, yes: Heropost looks for the feed your home page announces and for common blog page names. If it can't find it, paste your blog page's address followed by `?format=rss`.

**Do I need to change anything in Squarespace?**

No. Squarespace blogs have their feed switched on, and Heropost only reads it.
