# Connect Reddit

Heropost posts to Reddit communities where you're an approved user. Each community is an account in Heropost, and every post has a title plus photos, a video, a link or text.

## How Reddit works in Heropost

On Reddit you post to **communities** (subreddits), so in Heropost every community you add becomes its own account. If you add three communities, you'll see three Reddit accounts in your workspace, and you tick the communities each post goes to.

Every Reddit post has a **title**, which Heropost calls **Caption**, plus one of: photos or a video, a link, or text.

## What you need

- **A Reddit account.**
- **Communities where you're an approved user.** Reddit tells Heropost which communities have you on their approved-users list, and only those are listed. Communities you've only joined aren't listed, so Heropost can't post to them.
- **Pop-ups allowed** for app.heropost.io.
- **The owner or Admin role** in your Heropost workspace.

If you moderate a community that doesn't appear, add your own username to its approved users in the community's mod tools, then add Reddit again.

## Connect your communities

1. Click your **workspace name** at the top of Heropost, then **Accounts**.
2. Press **Add Profile** and choose **Reddit**.
3. Reddit opens in a small window. Log in to Reddit if asked, and press **Allow**.
4. Back in Heropost, **Add Social Account** lists your communities under **Pages**. Tick the ones you want, or press **Select All**.
5. Press **Done**. Heropost shows **Account successfully added**, and each community appears on your Accounts page.

Reddit's window uses the Reddit account you're logged in to in your browser. To connect a different Reddit account, log out at reddit.com first, or use a private window, then add Reddit again.

## What you can post

**Community rules.** Before a photo or video post, Heropost checks that the community accepts images or videos. Each community also has its own rules, such as required flair, title formats or who may post. When a community refuses a post, the failed post shows Reddit's reason.

## Options in the Reddit tab

- **Media**, **Link** or **Post:** the kind of post, chosen with the buttons on the tab. **Media** is the default. The upload box is used only for **Media**.
- **Caption:** the post's title. Required, up to 300 characters.
- **URL:** the web address for a **Link** post.
- **Text:** the body of a **Post**, up to 40,000 characters.
- **Take … from the All tab:** switch it on to reuse the All tab's content. It takes the caption, plus the media for **Media** or the address for **Link**. A long All-tab caption may be too long for a Reddit title, so check the Reddit tab.

There's no field to pick the community: each post goes to the communities whose avatars you select in the editor. Photos get your [watermark](/docs/social-accounts/watermark/), if you set one for the account or the workspace.

## Limits and holds

- **No holds from Heropost.** Heropost doesn't pause Reddit accounts. Reddit and each community set their own limits; when Reddit refuses a post, the failed post shows Reddit's reason.
- **Connections.** Heropost renews its access to Reddit each time it posts. If Reddit refuses, posts fail with "The Reddit connection for this account has expired. Reconnect the account to resume posting." [Reconnect](/docs/social-accounts/reconnect/) one community, and the other communities from the same Reddit login in that workspace are renewed with it.

## Analytics and the Social Inbox

- **Analytics:** Heropost doesn't collect analytics for Reddit.
- **Social Inbox:** Reddit isn't part of the Social Inbox.

## Errors and fixes

### When you connect or reconnect

| "Authentication cancelled" | Reddit's window was closed or blocked, or you didn't press **Allow**. | Allow pop-ups for app.heropost.io and try again. |
| **Add Social Account** is empty | Reddit returned no community where you're an approved user. | Ask the community's moderators to add you as an approved user, or add yourself in a community you moderate, then add Reddit again. |
| A community you joined is missing | Joined communities aren't listed, only those where you're an approved user. | As above. |
| "Selected account not found" | You reconnected with a Reddit account that isn't an approved user of this community any more, or a different Reddit account. | Log in to the right Reddit account. Check that it's still an approved user of the community. |

### When a post fails

Failed posts are listed under **Content → Posting Errors**. Reddit's own messages are shown as Reddit wrote them.

| "The Reddit connection for this account has expired. Reconnect the account to resume posting." | Reddit refused to renew Heropost's access. | [Reconnect](/docs/social-accounts/reconnect/) the account, then send the post again with **Duplicate Failed**. |
| "Subreddit {name} doesn't support images" / "Subreddit {name} doesn't support videos" | The community doesn't accept that kind of media. | Post it as a **Link** or **Post**, or untick that community. |
| "Posting media failed" / "Submitting media failed" / "Submitting gallery failed" | Reddit didn't accept the photo, video or gallery. | Check the community's rules and the file, then send the post again with **Duplicate Failed**. |
| Another message from Reddit | Reddit or the community refused the post and gave its reason, for example a missing flair or a title rule. | Read the reason. Heropost sends posts without flair, so a community that requires flair may refuse them: post there on Reddit directly. |

Failed posts aren't sent again by themselves. After fixing the cause, open the post from **Content → Posting Errors** and choose **⋮ → Duplicate Failed**: you get a draft with only the accounts that failed, ready to schedule. See [The Posting Errors page](/docs/troubleshooting/posting-errors/).

## Questions

**Why can't I see a community I joined?**

Heropost lists only the communities where you're an approved user, as Reddit reports them. Joining a community isn't enough. Ask its moderators to add you as an approved user, then add Reddit again.


**Can I post to my own Reddit profile?**

If Reddit lists your profile (shown as u_ followed by your username) when you connect, yes: tick it like a community, and posts go to your profile.


**Can I add flair, or mark a post as NSFW or a spoiler?**

No. Heropost posts without flair, and never marks posts NSFW or spoiler. For communities that need these, post on Reddit directly.


**Can I post to several communities at once?**

Yes. Tick every community you want in the post. Each one gets its own post, with the same title and content.


**Does each community count as an account on my plan?**

Yes. Each community you add is one social account in Heropost.
