How it works#

Medium publishes a public feed for every author and publication. Paste the profile or publication address, and Heropost reads its feed: there's no Medium login. Each new article becomes an item you can post, or that Heropost posts for you.

Set it up#

  1. Open the author profile or publication on Medium and copy the address, for example https://medium.com/@your-profile. Use the profile or publication, not a single article.
  2. In Heropost, click Automations in the left menu, then Create Automation.
  3. On the Medium card, press Add Automation.
  4. Paste the address in Medium Profile or Publication URL and press Save. Heropost shows "Medium automation created! Your items are being imported and will appear shortly."
  5. Press Settings on the new automation, select your accounts, choose Read from Source or Publish Immediately, and press Save.
You paste Heropost reads
https://medium.com/@your-profile https://medium.com/feed/@your-profile
https://medium.com/your-publication https://medium.com/feed/your-publication
https://blog.yourcompany.com (custom domain) https://blog.yourcompany.com/feed

What each item contains#

Part From the feed
Title The article's title.
Description Its summary as plain text, or its text when there's no summary.
Link The article's address.
Picture One picture: the first picture in the article, or its preview picture.

Settings that work well#

  • Preferred Post Type: Link, Backup Post Type: Image.
  • Caption: Custom with {{title}} {{link}}: Medium articles are long, and Default can be over some networks' limits.

All settings: Automations: how they work.

If it doesn't work#

What you see What it means What to do
"Invalid URL" The address isn't complete. Paste the full address, starting with https://.
"An unexpected error occurred while processing your request." when you save Heropost couldn't read a feed at that address, usually because it's a single article or the profile name is mistyped. Paste the profile or publication address. Open the feed address from the table above in a private browser window to check it.
A post reached only some networks The article's text was over a network's limit. Set Caption to Custom with a short template.

Questions#

Can I follow a publication I write for?

Yes. Paste the publication's address to get every new article in it, or your profile's address to get only yours.
