Add a first comment

Heropost can post a comment right after your post goes out, from the same account: handy for hashtags, links or extra details. It works on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and Bluesky, but not on Stories.

How it works#

A first comment is a comment Heropost posts on your post right after it's published, from the same account. People use it for hashtags (to keep the caption clean), a link, a question to start the conversation, or credits.

Write it in the First Comment box, on the All tab or on a network's tab. Heropost sends it once the post is live on that account. If the post fails, no comment is sent.

Where it works#

Network First comment limit How it appears
Facebook 8,000 characters, up to 30 hashtags A comment by your Page
Instagram 2,200 characters, up to 30 hashtags A comment by your account
LinkedIn 20,000 characters A comment by your profile or Page
YouTube 10,000 characters, up to 30 hashtags A comment by your channel on the video
Threads 500 characters A reply to your post
Bluesky 300 characters A reply to your post

Not available on Stories (Facebook and Instagram), or on X, Pinterest, TikTok, Google Business Profile, Reddit and Telegram: those tabs have no First Comment box.

Add a first comment#

  1. Open the post in the editor.
  2. On the All tab, write it in First Comment. Every network above that takes its content from the All tab gets it. Networks without first comments ignore it.
  3. Or, for one network only: open its tab, switch off Take … from the All tab, and write it in that tab's First Comment.
  4. Check the preview: the comment shows under the post, headed First Comment.
  • The All tab's counter shows the smallest limit among the post's networks that take a first comment. With Bluesky in the post, that's 300.
  • @mentions work in the Facebook tab's first comment: type @ and a Page's name, then pick it.
  • Copy it to every network with the sync icon in the box ("Update first comment to all social networks"). It replaces the first comment on every network that has its own, and skips networks and Stories without one.
  • Spintax works here too: {Thanks for reading|What do you think?} picks one option for each account. See Caption Library, hashtags and spintax.

Other ways to add one#

  • Bulk upload: fill in the Comment column of your CSV. See Bulk upload posts from a CSV.
  • Hero_Agent and AI tools: ask for a first comment when you ask for a post, for example "Put the hashtags in the first comment".

If the comment doesn't appear#

What you see What it means What to do
Content → Posting Errors lists "Failed to create a comment to {Network} post" The post went out, but the network refused the comment. The reason is shown under it. Add the comment yourself in the network's app. Fix the cause before your next post: for example, reconnect the account or shorten the comment.
The post failed, and there's no comment The comment is only sent after the post is live. Fix the post's error and send it again with Duplicate Failed. The comment goes with it.
No First Comment box The network doesn't support it, or the post is a Story. Put the text in the caption instead.
The box is on the network's tab but empty, while the All tab has text That tab uses its own fields. Write it there, or switch Take … from the All tab back on.
"You can have up to {N} characters in first comment" The comment is longer than that network allows. Shorten it, or give that network its own, shorter comment.
"You can have up to 30 hashtags in first comment" Facebook, Instagram and YouTube allow 30 hashtags. Remove some.

Questions#

When is the first comment posted?

Straight after the post is live on that account. Heropost doesn't add a delay.

Can Heropost pin the comment?

No. Heropost posts the comment; pin it in the network's app if the network lets you.

Can I put my hashtags in the first comment?

Yes. Heropost posts them as a normal comment from your account, which keeps the caption short. On Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, the caption and the first comment can each have up to 30 hashtags.

Can I change the first comment after the post is published?

Not in Heropost. Edit or delete it in the network's app.

Can I add a first comment on X?

No. X posts in Heropost have no first comment. Put the extra text in the post itself.
