Paste your Substack publication's address and Heropost imports each new issue with its title, summary, link and picture, ready to share on your networks. Custom domains work too.

How it works#

Every Substack publication has a public feed at its address followed by /feed. Heropost reads it, so there's no Substack login. Each new issue becomes an item you can post, or that Heropost posts for you. It works with any public publication, yours or one you follow.

Set it up#

  1. Copy your publication's home page address, for example https://your-name.substack.com or your custom domain. Use the publication, not a single post.
  2. In Heropost, click Automations in the left menu, then Create Automation.
  3. On the Substack card, press Add Automation.
  4. Paste the address in Substack Publication URL and press Save. Heropost shows "Substack automation created! Your items are being imported and will appear shortly."
  5. Press Settings on the new automation, select your accounts, choose Read from Source or Publish Immediately, and press Save.
You paste Heropost reads
https://your-name.substack.com https://your-name.substack.com/feed
https://substack.com/@your-name https://your-name.substack.com/feed
https://yournewsletter.com (custom domain) https://yournewsletter.com/feed

What each item contains#

Part From your feed
Title The issue's title.
Description Its subtitle or summary as plain text, or its text when there's none.
Link The issue's address.
Picture One picture: from the feed or the issue, or the issue's preview picture.

Settings that work well#

  • Preferred Post Type: Link shows the issue's card on networks that take link posts. Backup Post Type: Image.
  • Caption: Custom, for example New issue: {{title}} {{link}}.

All settings: Automations: how they work.

If it doesn't work#

What you see What it means What to do
"Invalid URL" The address isn't complete. Paste the full address, starting with https://.
"An unexpected error occurred while processing your request." when you save Heropost couldn't read a feed at that address, usually because it's a single post or the name is mistyped. Paste the publication's home page address. Check that it followed by /feed opens in a private browser window.

Questions#

Are paid issues shared too?

Heropost shares what your public feed shows for each issue: its title, summary and link. Readers who open the link see what Substack shows them.

Can I follow someone else's newsletter?

Yes. Any public publication works. Make sure you're allowed to share what you post.
