Connect Bluesky

Heropost publishes to your Bluesky account. Connect it with your username and an app password, then post text, up to 4 photos, a video or a link card, with a first comment posted as a reply.

What you need#

  • A Bluesky account, and its username (for example yourname.bsky.social) or email address.
  • An app password (recommended). Bluesky lets you create passwords for apps only, which you can revoke at any time without changing your main password. If your account uses two-factor authentication, an app password is required.
  • A plan that includes Bluesky. Every plan sold today does. The original Lifetime plan can't connect Bluesky: choosing it opens Time to Level up!. Some older plans have a separate, smaller allowance for X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, Threads and Bluesky together; see How many accounts your plan includes.
  • The owner or Admin role in your Heropost workspace.

Bluesky has no sign-in window. You type your details into Heropost, and Heropost signs in to Bluesky with them each time it posts.

Connect your Bluesky account#

  1. In Bluesky, create an app password: open the Bluesky settings link in Heropost's window (step 4), or go to Bluesky's settings and find App Passwords. Copy the password Bluesky shows.
  2. Click your workspace name at the top of Heropost, then Accounts.
  3. Press Add Profile and choose Bluesky.
  4. The Add Bluesky Account window opens. Enter your Bluesky username or email address in Username or Email, and paste the app password into Password.
  5. Press Add. Heropost checks the details with Bluesky.
  6. Add Social Account lists your Bluesky profile with its @handle. Tick it and press Done. Heropost shows Account successfully added.

To connect a second Bluesky account, add Bluesky again with that account's username and app password.

Threads of posts, quote posts, alt text, labels No
Text Limit

How text appears. Hashtags and web addresses in your text become clickable on Bluesky. @mentions appear as plain text, without a link to the person.

Photo size. Bluesky takes photos of up to 1 MB (1,000,000 bytes). Heropost checks this when you upload in the editor; photos from automations and AI tools aren't checked in advance and are sent as they are, so keep them small. Heropost doesn't compress photos for Bluesky.

Options in the Bluesky tab#

  • Post Type: Media/Caption (text, photos or a video) or Link.
  • Link: the address for a Link post. Use the full address, starting with https://. The caption is optional on a link post.
  • First Comment: published as a reply to your post, from your account, right after it goes out. See Add a first comment.
  • Take media, caption, first comment from the All tab: switch it on to reuse the All tab's content. On a Link post, it takes the link instead of the media.

Photos get your watermark, if you set one for the account or the workspace.

Limits and holds#

  • No holds from Heropost. Heropost doesn't pause Bluesky accounts. When Bluesky refuses a post, the failed post shows Bluesky's reason.
  • Your password is the connection. If you delete the app password in Bluesky, or change the password you connected with, posts fail until you reconnect with a new one:
  1. On the Accounts page, open the ⋮ menu on the Bluesky account and choose Reconnect.
  2. Reconnect Bluesky Account asks only for Password. Paste a new app password.
  3. Press Reconnect.

Then send the posts that failed again: open each one from Content → Posting Errors and use ⋮ → Duplicate Failed. See Reconnect an account.

Analytics and the Social Inbox#

  • Analytics: Heropost doesn't collect analytics for Bluesky.
  • Social Inbox: Bluesky isn't part of the Social Inbox.

Errors and fixes#

When you connect or reconnect#

Message What it means What to do
Time to Level up! Your plan doesn't include Bluesky (the original Lifetime plan). Press Upgrade to see plans. See Lifetime plans explained.
"Looks like you've reached the limit of your plan. Please upgrade your account to access for features." The workspace owner's plan has no room for another account, or for another account on these networks. Remove an account you don't use, or upgrade. See account limits.
"An unexpected error occurred while processing your request." after you press Add or Reconnect Bluesky didn't accept the username or password. Check the username (or email) and paste a fresh app password. Make sure you can sign in at bsky.app.
Add stays grayed out The password field is empty. Paste the app password.

In the post editor#

Message What it means What to do
"You can upload up to 4 images or 1 video" / "You can upload up to 4 files" Too many files, or photos mixed with a video. Keep up to 4 photos, or one video.
"Please select only one video file at a time" You added a second video. Use one video.
"Wrong file format. Please upload JPG, PNG, WEBP, MP4 or MOV" Bluesky posts take those types only. Convert the file. Use MP4 for video.
"Image size limit: 1MB maximum" The photo is over 1 MB. Compress or resize it.
"Video size limit: 50MB maximum" The video is over 50 MB. Compress it.
"Duration of the video must not more than 60 seconds" The video is longer than a minute. Trim it.
"Codec is not supported. For more information please check requirements" Your browser can't read the video. Export it again as an H.264 MP4.
"You can have up to 300 characters in caption" / "You can have up to 300 characters in first comment" The text is too long. Shorten it.
"Link is required" / "Invalid URL" A Link post needs a full web address. Paste the full address, starting with https://.
Hovering Schedule All shows "Please select accounts for Bluesky" Bluesky is on for this post, but no account is ticked. Tick one, or switch Bluesky off for the post.

When you schedule, the same rules are checked again: "Unable to post because Bluesky requires link.", "Unable to post because Bluesky requires caption or media.", "Unable to post because Bluesky does not support a combination of different media types." or "Unable to post because Bluesky does not support posting multiple videos." Open the Bluesky tab, fix what the message says, and schedule again.

When a post fails#

Failed posts are listed under Content → Posting Errors. Bluesky's own messages are shown as Bluesky wrote them.

Message What it means What to do
"Invalid app.bsky.feed.post record: grapheme too big (maximum 300, got {N})" The text is over Bluesky's 300-character limit, usually from an automation or an AI tool. Send the post again with Duplicate Failed, and shorten the text on the copy's Bluesky tab before you schedule it.
Another message starting "Invalid app.bsky.feed.post record:" Bluesky refused the post as it was built, for example a video that isn't an MP4. Export the video as an MP4 within the limits above, then send the post again with Duplicate Failed.
"Account has been taken down" Bluesky took the account down. Resolve it with Bluesky. Meanwhile, untick the account in new posts and automations.
A sign-in message from Bluesky, such as an invalid identifier or password The app password was deleted or the password changed. Reconnect with a new app password.
"Your subscription does not include Bluesky" The account was connected earlier, but the workspace owner's plan doesn't include Bluesky (the original Lifetime plan). Upgrade, or untick Bluesky in your posts.
"Failed to create a comment to Bluesky post" The post went out, but the first comment didn't. Reply to the post on Bluesky.

Failed posts aren't sent again by themselves. After fixing the cause, open the post from Content → Posting Errors and choose ⋮ → Duplicate Failed: you get a draft with only the accounts that failed, ready to schedule. See The Posting Errors page.

Questions#

Is it safe to give Heropost my Bluesky password?

Use an app password rather than your main password. Heropost uses it only to sign in to Bluesky when it posts, and you can delete it in Bluesky at any time, which ends Heropost's access straight away.

Why aren't my @mentions linked on Bluesky?

Heropost publishes @mentions as plain text, so the person isn't linked. Hashtags and web addresses in your text are clickable.

Can I add alt text to my photos?

No. Heropost publishes Bluesky photos without alt text. When alt text matters, post that photo from Bluesky directly.

My photo publishes on other networks but fails on Bluesky. Why?

Bluesky takes photos up to 1 MB. Compress or resize the photo on the Bluesky tab. Photos from automations and AI tools aren't checked in advance, so keep their source images small.

How does the first comment appear?

As a reply to your post, from your account, right after the post goes out.
